New B engine mechanical water pump

Here are pictures of the new B engines with a old style mechanical water pump,,,,as you can see some white dried up coolant leaking from the water pump. here are some more pictures of this fine new design water pump,,,,I don’t know why we went back to the old style water pump and go away from the newer style electric water pump.this new design gets better with a vacuum control flap,,,,this flap opens and closes off water going to and from the water pump,,,,we are seeing these water pump failing early this car had 15k miles.

worked in the lab almost every time, saved bmw 5 bucks per unit…. engineering said we can due better, bean pushers said,” good enough put it in, we will warranty it for 3 yrs and still be ahead, screw them after that”,leave that to marketing to keep them buying our cars…

I suspect BMW expects this water pump to last longer than the expensive electric one used on the N55. I still see plastic impellers. Welcome back to 1999 !!!!!

My B58 is over 30k miles and no water pump issues but drinking coolant.
Is this a sign of water pump issues to come?
What is wrong with these new mechanicals that they are failing at 15k?

    • This could be a sign the water pump is leaking,,,,why are they failing early,,,maybe because BMW forgot how to make old style water pump,,,lol,,,,BMW said they changed the design on the newer waterpump,,,let’s hope this is true

Hi, is it recommended to change the water pump and thermostat when the timing chain is changed for an N20 engine (F30 model) or not normally needed? Also did the N20 engines come with the electric water pumps as standard and if so what has been your general experience with these type of water pumps? Finally, with electric water pumps what early symptoms (eg dashboard warning lights, etc) would you see if there were any issues prior to any serious problem? Many Thanks

    • No it is not recommend to replace the water pump and t-stat when changing the timing chain,,,,you usually replace it when it goes bad,,,the t-stat on a N20 sucked and will need to be replaced when then they fail will cause the check engine light to come on,,,,,the water pump when they fail will also cause the check engine light to come on you might also hear the front fan come on while driving for no reason which is also a sign the water pump is starting to fail.

Hello, so mine does exactly this.
Does bmw made a recall campaign to change it ?
    I bet they dont…

Is it a though job on the b48?
From was I see thing are really dense in this engine compare to n20.
Before I had a 328i with n20, bleeding procedure was very easy.
When doing the bleed, is it necessary to use a vacuum tool as I read it on a bmw forum?
Or does the procedure (full throttle before starting the car) is the same as on the n20 ?

    Thank you.
