Ok so of you with the new Hybrid May get a notice for battery software update,,,,this battery is for starter motor operation ,,,this little grey box is what we hook up to the battery and it programs the battery
the battery is usually somewhere inside the engine compartment,,,,this one on a X5 is under the windshield area,,,,you can also see there is a electrical connector on the side of the battery for programming.

Hey, is there any form of contact you have that I can get ahold of you? I have some questions about my N63 engine and what to do. It’s starting to smoke and I’ve had two people tell me different things. One guy says rebuild the turbos and then if it still smokes do stem seals. I have another guy says the turbos are most likely fine, shouldn’t need to rebuild them and just do valve stem seals.

Sorry this blog is the only way to get ahold of me,,,,,I can answer your problem,,,you need to drive and get engine warm then let engine idle for about 15 to 20 minutes,,,,then get inside the car while it’s been idling for about 15 to 20 minutes then stab the throttle and rev the engine up to 5k really quick and let it come back down to idle,,,then step out of car quickly and see if you have a cloud of blue smoke come out of the exhaust,,,,if you do then you need valve stem seals replaced more likely is you problem,,,,,if it’s a turbo you would blow smoke all the time

Why does this programming need a different tool? Is this unit (battery and module) not hooked up to the vehicle’s communication system?

It is hooked up to the communication system,,,we just program the battery separately.

Hi, I’ll ask this question here since it is about battery though conventional.
I have a 2015 X3 x28i base model and the battery just died a couple of days ago. I tried to jump start and drove for an hour, and it didn’t help – it wouldn’t start again. So I am thinking about replacing the battery myself but I heard that it needs to be registered anyway at the dealership. Is that true? Is there way to register without help from dealership? Thank you in advance.

Yes you can replace the battery,,,but you should register the new battery to the vehicle,,,,you need diagnostic equipment to register the battery,,,,you might be able to find a Indy repair shop to perform that procedure for you.

It is a weird thing… when the car wouldn’t start there would be a message “Discharging battery – start the engine” coming up or something like that, but never “Low battery” as I guess it should have. Now that a new battery installed and registered through Indy shop, there’s still this message popping up “Discharging battery”… The shop tried to clear it up but it would come back again, They guessed that my IBS sensor on the negative cable might off went bad but not sure about it. It is $300 part. I really don’t know what to do at this point. I am afraid if I go ahead with the cable replacement I might just waste the money if it is not the real problem. I would appreciate your thoughts on this.

Your Indy shop is correct the IBS cable should be your problem,,,,there should be a fault for the IBS cable faulty signal or faulty connection or faulty resistance which would tell us that the IBS cable is bad.

Appreciate your quick reply! They were not 100% sure that it was a problem with IBS cable because they couldn’t see any codes indicating faulty IBS. I want just to try to disconnect the negative cable for an hour or so and see if that would clear it out. Will I have to re-register the battery again after doing it?

No once the battery is registered it stays registered until the next new battery is replaced,,,,you are good to disconnect the battery and reconnect.

Thanks again! After the X3 was in the garage for two days without being used I started the engine today to see if the message was still there and it wasn’t. Drove the car for about an hour and the message didn’t come back. I hope it has gone for good. But you never know… Thanks a lot for your help!
